San Rafael is Marin's civic hub and largest city. The area was broadly inhabited by the Native American Miwok Nation before it was colonized by Spain. Today there are approximately 60K residents within the sprawling boundaries of San Rafael. The city includes a wide diversity of residential and open space areas from Lucas Valley to China Camp and Terra Linda to the Canal District. The city has a large water border with a thriving boating community, beachfronts, waterside homes and gorgeous recreational destinations like McNeer's Beach and the China Camp historical site. The civic center hosts one of the largest farmer's markets on the West Coast every Sunday, rain or shine. The same venue is home to the County Fair each year at the beginning of July.
